Events in Davis this Week

Not sure I'll make it to all of these, but there are a number of events worth checking out in Davis this week:

Birch Lane Elementary Garden Sale ~ Plant starts for the veggie and flower garden, plus other garden goodies made by students, are on sale between now and Friday the 11th. Finish your summer planting and support our schools at the same time! Hours and a list of what's for sale here.

Community Values Forum for Davis city council candidates ~ I still need more information before I make up my mind in this election, so I plan to attend the candidates forum hosted by Davis Community Church tonight at 8pm and focused on "underlying values that guide candidates' decision making". The word "values" means different things to different people; this forum is about values held by the Davis community. The event is open to the public, and there will be opportunities to submit questions ahead of time. Event details are here, and a list of questions (and future responses) is here.

Learn about native bees ~ Neal Williams, assistant professor of entomology at UC Davis, will present a public lecture titled "Promoting Native Bees for Gardens, Farms and Native Plants" at the Davis Public Library on Thursday night from 7-8pm. This is part of the Davis Botanical Society meeting and sounds interesting and informative whether or not you keep bees. More info here.

Wild Family Day ~  Sunday from 1-4pm at the arboretum gazebo, the UCD Arboretum and the student group Wild Campus are putting on an event focused on conservation of native species. This sounds like a fun, kid-friendly event. More info here.

This guy is NOT a native!

Whole Earth Festival ~ Can't leave out this perennial favorite! Music, arts & crafts & sustainable goods, education tables, kids activities and more start Friday and wrap up Sunday on the UCD quad. More info and a festival program here.

What are you most likely to attend?

  2. Oh, that's too bad. The Whole Earth Festival was especially nice this year. If you're interested in the Birch Lane plant sale, that's actually still going on. It's a partnership between Birch Lane and Korematsu school down the street, and you can still buy plants to pick up at Korematsu on Friday. The list of plants for sale is at http://www.mykorematsu.com/plant-sale/. I think they want you to order online and pick up at the school.

I missed the candidates forum, but some of the candidates are submitting written responses to the questions and you can read those at http://communityvalues2012.blogspot.com. Plus, there might be video of the event available soon.
